LHEF Courses for 2024

“Living History: Spark of the American Revolution - The Battles of Lexington and Concord”
(15 Hour In-service Course)

Participants will be able to:
- identify the reasons for the American Revolution
- discuss the impact of literature and music created before, during and after the American Revolution.
- summarize the impact of the battles of Lexington and Concord

Credit Hours - 15

Cost of registration is $150.00 (plus price of tickets to birthplace of Teddy Roosevelt and the American Museum of Natural History)

“Living History: Slavery in the Northern States and the Civil War”
(15 Hour In-service Course)

Participants will be able to:
Discuss the impact of slavery on the Northern states prior to the Civil War
Understand the economic importance of slavery in New York City
Identify the stories of enslaved individuals in the North
Understand the impact of slavery on the enslaved population of the Northern states
Understand how teachers can use this information to better educate students

“Join the Continental Army”
(36 Hour Course)

Course Description:
The course is a reality approach to the study of the American
Revolution. Conducting an overnight authentic encampment, participants will
immerse themselves in the American War of Independence. This course will apply
social studies, and English Language Arts Standards.

Kings Ferry – Riverfront Park –site of encampment
Drive to West Point: Visit West Point Military Musuem
Visit Trophy Point and Fort Putnam (depending on AcademySchedule)
Visit Fort Montgomery if time permits
Set up encampment and start total immersion encampment

“Living History: American Revolution on the Hudson and the Burning of Kingston”
(15 Hour In-service Course)

Participants will be able to:
- identify the reasons why the Hudson Rover was so important to the American war effort in the War of Independence. 
- discuss the impact of the American Revolution on Hudson Valley communities
- summarize the events that took place during Burgoyne’s Saratoga Campaign in 1777

Factories, Farmers and Folklore of the Hudson Valley in the 19th Century (15 Hour In-service Couse)
Dates:
Friday, December 6th , 2024 (4:00 PM – 9:00PM) 5 Hours
Saturday, December 7th , 2024 (9:00AM – 7:00PM) 10 Hours

Target Audience: All educators, administrators and school staff
Cost: $150.00
- Participants are responsible for all site and tour fees, travel and meal costs

Participants will be able to:
- identify the reasons for the early Industrial Revolution in the Hudson Valley
- discuss the impact of literature and music created before, during and after the Industrial Revolution.
- summarize the importance of raw materials such as iron and charcoal for the Industrial Revolution

This course will also focus on the history, literature, and the culture the 19th century Industrial
Revolution in the Hudson Valley. Putnam County’s history was shaped by this revolution as it
contained the iron, lumber and access to river transportation that made industrialization possible.
Within the confines of Clarence State Fahnestock park an educator can see the remnants of iron
mines, charcoal burner sites and the farms where 19 th century people lived and worked. Educators
will learn about the rich history of this area and bring this information back to their students.
This course will consist of an in-person meeting at Carmel High School in Putnam County, New York
on Friday, December 6 th and a site visitation to Clarence Fahnestock State Park on Saturday,
December 7th. Participants will be responsible for all travel costs, and meals for the site visitation.
