Brief History: Brief History:
This was the first year Pine Plains has had a living history program. The program
was geared towards an authentic 18th century encampment and re-enactment at
Fort Ticonderoga. After taking a number of living history courses, and one at
Fort Ticonderoga with Joe Ryan through the Foundation, I wanted to share the
experience with my students. On May 14th and 15th we took the 4 hour bus ride
up to the Fort and began to set up our camp. My students and I wore period dress
as we engaged in all activities. Our activities included drilling on the parade
grounds, cooking our meals, firing a field cannon, working on a soldiers hut,
touring the fort's grounds, and a "ghost walk". As these were 11th
grade honor students, they were responsible for reading a number of books prior
to our trip and required to have a full understanding of the history of the
Fort and the region prior to our arrival. In addition, they were required to
keep a journal that reflected an understanding of 18th century military life
as well as the history of the Fort. This program and field trip was made possible
through the support of Joe Ryan and the Living History Education Foundation.
Many of my students remarked this was the best field trip they had ever been
on and I am looking forward to our trip to Fort Ticonderoga next spring.
