Living History:
Baseball
and the Civil War
This
15 hr. course takes the participants on a pilgrimage to Cooperstown,
NY, the home of baseball. Participants learn the facts and the
myths surrounding “the American Pastime”.
By the
time of the Civil War, the basic rules of baseball are established
and widely played among the Union soldiers. The course begins
at the Baseball Hall of Fame, where the rules
and history are
explained. The course then shifts to nearby Glimmerglass State
Park where participants recreate a game wearing Union uniforms
and playing by the rules of 1864. Participants will recreate
a a 19th century encampment and engage in training activities.
The next day, the class returns to the Baseball Hall of Fame
for an in-depth tour of the Hall of Fame led by the educational
director. Participants gain knowledge and experience to re-create
activities in the classroom for their students. This class is
sponsored by the Living History Education Foundation. A $45 check,
to cover materials, made payable to the Living History Education
Foundation will be collected at the first class. Transportation
to and from Cooperstown is the participant's responsibility.
Target
audience: Elementary/Secondary, Special Education,
