Course
Description:
What do you know about the Canadian influence in the War of
1812? Are you ready to explore it first hand on the sites of
the Battles of Chateauguay and Plattsburgh. You will spend two
days in 1812 uniforms with appropriate gear and musket. As a
soldier you will erect an encampment and prepare an authentic
meal. You will not have to camp overnight. Historic site visits,
museum artifacts and programs dealing with the War of 1812 will
be made available to you. The cross-curriculum approach of living
history will be utilized to study Canadian, American and English
social, military, economic, geographical and cultural factors
which have shaped our history.
Course
objectives:
This course will use the Living History approach to the War
of 1812. Participants will utilize a wealth of materials (documents,
maps, artifacts, etc.) to immerse themselves in the history
of New York State, United States and Canada during the early
19th Century. The course applies the Social Studies Standards,
character based education and the Regents Action Plan. Educators
will learn to apply the latest brain research and experiential
learning to Living History. Participants will experience cross
curriculum application, collegial sharing and “hands on
history”. Teachers will see the “Forgotten War”
in a new light. The Battle of Plattsburgh will be remembered.

3. Utilize DBQ’s of the War of 1812 and Canadian Border
4. Choose classroom materials (interest center)
5. Create a Living History Experience with their students
6. See future opportunities for professional growth through
the
Living History Education Foundation and their own approach to
study

role plus
the Canadian connection.
Standard 2: World History in its application to US History
Standard 3: Geography – maps and geographic factors in
the history of the US, NY and Canada
Standard 4: Economic – factors which bear on American
History
Standard 5: Civic & Citizenship – provide for the
common defense
Character Based Education – ranking and
responsibility is based on the “merit and demerit system”

All meals are taken in family fashion for collegial sharing
(paid by LHEF). A sense of humor is mandatory plus have journal
writing materials with you.
