Living History: The Battle of New York City in 1776 Course

Description:
The geography of New York City made it a strategic post for both the British and Continental armies. In the year 1776, these armies clashed for control of Manhattan Island. Facing overwhelming odds, George Washington fought to keep it out of British hands. The untried and inexperienced Continental Army fought valiantly but gave way to the thoroughly professional British Army and their German allies. For the next seven years New York would be an occupied city and a Loyalist stronghold. This course will explore the strategic location of New York City and many Revolutionary War sites that can be visited in it today. Participants will also experience camp life by setting up an 18th century army camp. They will dress, eat, drill, discuss politics, listen to music and live overnight as a Continental soldier. Participants will also load, fire and clean 18th century muskets. The course will take place over two weekends. The first weekend will be spent visiting sites such as Fraunces Tavern, Brooklyn Heights, the Morris-Jumel Mansion and the New York Historical Society. The second weekend will be spent camping out on Governors Island.
