A Living History Study of the Arnold-Andre Conspiracy

“ Living History stirs the emotions and makes the senses more receptive to learning.”

This course will utilize the rich heritage of New York State to bring to life the compelling Arnold/Andre Conspiracy that could have sealed the fate of the American cause during the revolutionary war! Teachers will utilize a course-curriculum approach of Living History to enhance their knowledge base and that of their students. Participants will examine some of the known and unknown local historic sites, museums and artifacts dealing with this exciting period of history. Participants need only a willingness to step back in time! The Living History Education Foundation will be underwriting the brunch at the exclusive Ye Olde ’76 House.

Presenters:
Gary Petagine has been a Special Education instructor at Carmel High School for 32 years. He is co-founder of a Living History program in his district, that includes a Revolutionary War course and a Civil War course. He also serves as a NYSUT Lobbyist to Albany. Sean Grady has been teaching social studies at Ardsley Middle School for 12 years. He is founder of several living history programs in that district, including Revolutionary War, Civil War, Vintage Baseball and the Old Croton Aqueduct Bike program. Both teachers are members of the 5th New York revolutionary war re-enactment regiment.

Course Objectives:
The course represents a new approach to the study of the Arnold/Andre Conspiracy-events include possible capture of West Point, Arnold’s flight to the HMS Vulture and Andre’s eventual capture and execution. The course involves a light hike; where participants will “walk in the footsteps of history,” a museum tour, a Washington HQ tour, dinner at an 18th century inn and jail, and will culminate in an authentic 18th century encampment. Participants will immerse themselves in the intrigue of the American Revolution. The course applies the NYS Social Studies Standards, character based education and the Regents action plan. Teachers will experience cross curriculum application, collegial sharing and “hands on” history.


Teachers Will Be Able To:
1. Develop lesson plans to implement Living History techniques.
2. Relate first person experiences of Benedict Arnold and John Andre.
3. Relate first person experiences of John Paulding.
4. Relate first person experiences of George Washington and staff.
5. Develop plans to utilize local historic sites.

Course Requirements:
1. Attendance and participation in activities.
2. Read and examine A Declaration of Principles
3. Study Redoubt Defenses of West Point Map
4. Examine primary source letters written by John Andre to Washington and Clinton
5. Read and critique Arnold’s Letter to Tallmadge as a classroom activity
6. Identify key players in the Arnold/Andre Conspiracy

Credit Options:
In-service credit (15 hours) based on district policy

$150 Registration with your check for the full PNW BOCES fee
